This is the official start or source of the River Thames. The first few miles of the Thames is called the Isis or the Infant Thames and is dry most of the year and the first mile atleast often doesn't even resemble a river bed. The monument marks the source and used to be with a statue of old father Thames but that was moved to the first lock, St John's lock near Letchlade.
