The view from the summit of Abano Pass

Abano Pass is a high-altitude mountain pass, reaching an elevation of 2,864 meters above sea level, situated between the Kakheti and Tusheti regions of Georgia. This rugged and remote road is only open from May to October, making it accessible for a limited time each year. Known as one of the highest roads in Georgia and Europe, the journey to the summit is notoriously difficult and dangerous.

The road is infamous for its extreme conditions, with steep drops, unpaved sections, and unpredictable weather. Along the route, numerous memorials stand in remembrance of those who have lost their lives attempting the perilous crossing. Each year, 10 to 12 people tragically die on the pass, earning it the nickname "death road." Despite the risks, the breathtaking views of the Caucasus Mountains continue to draw adventurers seeking to experience this wild and beautiful region.
