Under the Lantern, Ely Cathedral
England

The Octagon Tower with its unique wooden lantern is regarded as one of the engineering wonders of the medieval world. Ely Cathedral's most remarkable feature was born out of disaster after the original Norman tower collapsed in 1322.

The new tower was rebuilt as an octagonal structure to provide firmer foundations, taking 18 years to complete. The elaborately decorated lantern is so called as it is designed to let in light.
