Viseu, historical center, aerial view
Portugal

The old urban center of Viseu, aka "Centro Histórico", has a medieval matrix, formed around the central core of the Cathedral, the seat of episcopal power. This urban area was delimited by the wall built in the 14th century, defining the city of the non-city. Although only a few fragments of the wall are preserved, the intramural city continues to maintain its symbolic character, its identity traits sedimented by constant cultural changes over time. Castles are part of our medieval imagination as structures where kings defined war strategies. The formation of our identity owes a lot to these fortifications. Isolated or in a network, they guaranteed the security of the territory. In the 12th century, similarly to what happened throughout the Portuguese territory, the castle of the city of Viseu was built, documented for the first time in 1123. Towering on the Sé hill, it incorporated the cathedral and the royal palace into its bosom. , becoming an impregnable fortification. The Fernandine Wars dictated its term, resisting the keep that currently faces Praça D. Duarte.
