The Praza die Maria Pita is named after Maria Mayor Fernandez de Camara y Pita a Galician heroine of the defense of A Coruna in 1589 against the English armada. A monument in honor of her is placed on the square. She was born 1565 and died 1643. (Information taken from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia)
