Baden-Baden is one of the most well-known cities in the black forest, mostly because of the spa. Almost as well-known among climbers are the Battert rocks high above - not so much because of difficult climbs (there are little) but because of their tradition.

Wilhelm Paulcke started to ascend the first routes in 1885. Since then quite a few climbers that got famous later started their career there: Martin Schliessler, Walter Stößer, Reinhard Karl, Bernd Kullmann and others.
