Buckles Tower, Firth, Orkney
Scotland

Buckle's To'er.

Before the advent of barbed wire, fields had to be enclosed with stone dykes which were time consuming to build. Only the arable land had dykes and the grassland outside had none. Bboys and girls aged 13 or so got the job of hirdy boy or girl and it was their job to keep an eye on the cows to make sure they didn't stray.

Buckle was a lad who liked to read so he built a stone tower he could sit on and see farther so he didn't have to interupt his reading so often during the day.
