Inner Courtyard Of Mallorquin Finca In Puigpunyent
Mallorca

The inner courtyard of ford las concas.

The layout of the main building is typical of large Fincas in Mallorca. It was constructed around a large central courtyard, whereby visitors and

carriages entered through a large doorway. From this interior patio, you then entered the various dwellings. Upstairs was the Casa Senorial (Owners Quarters). On the ground level was the large communal kitchen, with a flagstone floor and a huge canopy fireplace. The stables and Caretakers Quarters were also on this level. Downstairs was the "Tafona" (Olive Press).
There is an outer courtyard, which we renamed "Hamlets Walk".
This housed the wells, horse troughs and fortifications. Along the main driveway, there were various Coach Houses, Blacksmiths Forge and the hayloft for the Stables below.
The buildings were constructed with local rocks, which were bound together with mud and "cemento natural" - a local mix of mud and lime in a mellow cinnamon colour. All the walls are three feet thick and built directly on to the earth, with no damp course or footings. The interior walls were all washed in local lime, called "cal" which, with annual applications, has an incredible soft, luminous look of crushed parchment and allows for the moisture to come through. (This is important where there are no damp courses.)
