Kirche St. Bartholomäus 1
Switzerland

The Church of St. Bartholomew in Saas-Grund canton of Valais, Switzerland, was first recorded in 1297. It was the church of the four villages of the Saas valley, Saas-Fee, Saas-Almagell, Saas-Grund and Saas-Balen. A new church was built on the old site in 1685 and consecrated on July 31, 1687. The current church was designed by architects Markus and Donat Burgener, father and son, and inaugurated on August 28, 1939 by Bishop Dr. Viktor Bieler. This church with 500 seats is the fifth parish church in Saas-Grund. The architects sought to adapt the exterior layout of the parish church to the mountainous area. The bell tower, shaped like a bell tower, was intended to recall the ancient connection between the Saas Valley and the neighboring Anzasca Valley in Italy.
