Lace Curtain
Utah

This cliff face south of Delta, Utah is known as the Lace Curtain.  From the sign:

Nature's Handiwork

This magnificent cliff, called the Lace Curtain, formed when Pahvant Butte erupted 15,500 years ago out of the water of former Lake Bonneville.  On other sides of the butte, wave action carved terraced benches.  But here on the north side, more intense waves cut this massive vertical cliff.  Minerals in groundwater then cemented the tuff of the cinder cone, a process that's still going on.

In places, muddy material has washed down the face of the cliff, like frosting dripping down the sides of a cake.  Those "drips" protect the rock from immediate erosion, while areas in-between weather out as small cavities and caverns leaving an intricate "lacey" effect.

The light color of Lace Curtain contrasts with dark volcanic rocks all around the valley.  This large volcanic field, the Black Rock Desert, includes Pahvant Butte and other cinder and spatter cones in the neighborhood such as Tabernacle Hill and Sunstone Knoll, ash beds, lava tubes, and lava flows, and hot springs and geothermal centers, sign of heat near the surface.  Most of the volcanic features range in age from a few million years to as recent as 660 years ago.
