Square of the church of San Michele, Castiglione in Garfagnana, Lucca- Italy
Tuscany

The village of Castiglione di Garfagnana, considered one of the most beautiful in Italy, is surrounded by woods and wild nature. This village stands on a wild, mountainous borderland. The landscape is very different from that of Tuscany that we all imagine with its gentle hills. Ludovico Ariosto described this area as "land of wolves and brigands". It is characterized by the fortress, by the massive defensive walls, the clearly medieval towers.

The first information of the church of San Michele dates back only to the 12th century. The building was built near the Lucca castle of Castiglione Garfagnana after the area's population increased. The church is well preserved, with its Latin cross plan and a single nave with a semicircular apse.
The facade is enriched by a decoration given by the different colors of the materials used for the construction.

The warm light of the august afternoon enhances the colors of the stone.
