Stone Floor of Jill Windmill
Brighton-Hove

The Stone floor is the middle floor of the rotating part of the mill, between the upper Bin and lower Spout floor.

The front millstones are Derbyshire peak stones, used mainly for maize, barley and oats. The rear millstones are French burr stone, constructed from segments of freshwater quartz, used mainly for wheat. The top millstone, weighing around three-quarters of a ton, rotates at 120 revolutions per minute.

Both set of millstones are encased in wooden tuns. Grain enters the millstone in the centre (the ‘eye’) and is ground into meal. The top millstone is dished so that the gap between the millstones gradually decreases as the grain moves towards the outer edge. The flour dresser, seen here below the rear window, separates the meal into fine flour, semolina and bran as it passes through different grades of wire mesh.

Jill Windmill is a traditional working post mill located in the South Downs National Park in Sussex. She is maintained by volunteers and more info can be found on the website - www.jillwindmill.org.uk/
