Dating from 1857, the original Umpqua Lighthouse here was the first on the Oregon coast. But it was built on the sand flats at the mouth of the river, was undermined by storms, and collapsed in 1864. A new light was completed in 1894 on this site, the furthest inland of any on the Pacific coast.
