Braga, Bom Jesus do Monte, Stairway of Portico, Chapela of Darkness, Mars Fountain

Bom Jesus, not counting the basilica, consists of ninetal chapels irregularly by the slope of this mount (formerly denominated from Santa Cruz) and linked to themselves by graceful and monumental stairs. Fourteen Capels closes the steps, the course and the scenes of the passion and death represented by sculptural groups and the last five related to the glorious life and the triumph of the resurrection. Due to the various reconstructions and enlargements the order of the chapels is not accurate taking into account, obviously, the logical order of the painful pathway.

After passing the porch, the slurry of the staircase are marked by chapels that represent episodes of Christ's life and passion. Figures, almost in natural size, are given with naive realism and pronounced dramatic intention.

The chapel of the darkness, of the eighth plant, with the Arquiepiscopal weapons in the cornice, containing the image of Christ with his hands tied and blindfolded, appearing, to the right, the Fountain of Mars, with countercurved backwards, Where the respective warlike attributes arise. In 1789, according to the map of the sanctuary made by Carlos Amarante, this chapel appears in the place he is, but at the time he housed another scene, that of the coronation that is currently represented on the 6th chapel. Inside the chapel of the darkness we can find the image of Bom Jesus sitting on a stone, from the authorship of Evangelist Vieira, with his wrists prisoners and his eyes covered.

Leaded from the house of Anas to Caifas, he made many questions fired to whom the good Jesus did not answer. But when he asked him if he was the Son of God, then he answered firmly: "You say, I am". Caiaphas tears the dresses in protest sign and adds: "It is a defendant of death." Then they cover your eyes and throw yourself upon it with slaps, spasticates, pitches and all kind of mistreatment.

Abroad and above the door padie can read: «Tunc Exposuerunt in faciem Ejus ... Alil Autem Palmas in faciem Ejus DeDerunt», translated by the face ... and others gave him slaps.

To the right of the chapel is the Fountain of Mars whose symbols warriors are a pistol, an alfange (species of sword that only cuts on one side, saber, wide, short and recurve sheet) and a spear.

Mars is the Roman god of war, symbolizes brutality, rejoicing himself with his physical strength and with his aggression normally cane for evil. If on the one hand it is the killer, punidater and avenging, on the other hand and the protector of the crops, the defender of the homes and the young.

It was customary, at least among the Sabins, sacrifice numerous young people in honor of Mars. The Christ of this chapel, well could be seen as a young man offered in a holocaust.
