Viewpoint at Ecola Point, near where Lt Clark first saw the Pacific
USA
"Ocian in view, o! the joy" was what Lt William Clark famously wrote in his journal on November 7, 1805. Clark was a bit premature, it was just the wide mouth of the Columbia River that he was seeing. But a few days later his Indian guides led him to a spot on the cliffs just north of here, where he looked out over the real thing.
