Ernst Tinaja Entrance
Mexico

This is a few hundred yards inside the entrance of the Ernst Tinaja canyon in Big Bend National Park in south Texas. The canyon has several spring-fed pools that are deadly to local wildlife because of their steep, algae-covered limestone sides which make them impossible to escape without help.

This image is taken in a less deadly part of the canyon, with a wide, flat gravel bottom edged by sheer walls of uplifted sediment showing hundreds of distinct layers in every color imaginable, often bejeweled with macro-crystals of quartz.
