hermitage of calomini, Lucca - Italy
Toscane

Most of the hermitage is wedged into the rock! One of the suggestive places to visit in Gargagnana, a pilgrimage destination in the province of Lucca.

The main church is in eighteenth-century style, the sacristy that was the original point is furnished with sculpted furniture. It is also possible to visit the old kitchen and the cells of the friars, also dug into the rock like the sacristy.
Legend says that around the year 1000, the Madonna revealed herself to a girl from the village of Calomini who immediately went to talk about it with the other inhabitants.
The citizens immediately took the image of Mary to the nearby town of Gallicano to be celebrated. The next day, the image of the Madonna was found in the spot where it was shown to the young woman. It was thus decided to build the sanctuary in the cave.
The hermitage can be easily reached by car, but the place is suggestive and offers a beautiful view. The atmosphere is mystical.
