Disused quarry near Holwell Tor, Dartmoor, Devon. VR
England

This image has been re-mastered for Virtual Reality using a suitable viewer.

Two hundred years ago, this rocky hillside on Dartmoor was a centre of industrial activity. It was a granite quarry. The stone from here and the nearby Haytor Quarry was transported across the moor using an early railway tracks. If you examine the satellite map, you can still see the network. The rails were carved from granite and it took up to 19 horses to haul the wagons down to a canal from which it was transported around the country.

Possibly its most famous use was in the construction of London Bridge which, in recent times was sold to the Americans and rebuilt in Havasu City, Arizona.

The blue area in the background is an ocean of bluebells at Holwell Lawn.
