Kaylee Sawyer murder
USA

WARNING!: Description below may be disturbing to some readers.

This views shows the B12 parking lot at Central Oregon Community College (COCC) in Bend, Oregon.  On July 24, 2016, Kaylee Anne Sawyer, 23, was walking home from a bachelorette party in Bend, Oregon after an argument with her boyfriend when she encountered 31-year-old campus security guard Edwin Lara.

Lara was wearing a security uniform from Central Oregon Community College (COCC) resembling an official police outfit and driving a campus security SUV with plexiglass separating the front and back seats and auto-locking doors.  He offered her a ride.

Sawyer, a COCC student and dental assistant, accepted the ride & was held in the back of his vehicle, unable to escape.  Lara drove to this secluded parking lot where he sexually assaulted and killed Sawyer.  Despite defensive wounds, her ultimate cause of death was ruled as blunt force trauma.  Her body would later be found in a ravine to the north between Sisters and Redmond.

In May 2019, the state of Oregon passed Kaylee's Law, which defines how campus security officers may appear so that are not confused with actual police officers. It also requires nationwide background checks of all individuals employed as special campus security officers.

In August 2022, two suspects were arrested for reportedly stealing the ashes of Kaylee Sawyer from a storage container.

As a side note, this case bears a similar resemblance to the case of Arlis Perry, a 19 year-old newlywed who was murdered inside the Stanford Memorial Church at Stanford University by Stephen Crawford, a security guard in 1974.  When DNA was linked to Crawford in 2018, law enforcement arrived at his residence to arrest him, however he committed suicide.

More About USA

The United States is one of the most diverse countries on earth, jam packed full of amazing sights from St. Patrick's cathedral in New York to Mount Hollywood California. The Northeast region is where it all started. Thirteen British colonies fought the American Revolution from here and won their independence in the first successful colonial rebellion in history. Take a look at these rolling hills carpeted with foliage along the Hudson river here, north of New York City. The American south is known for its polite people and slow pace of life. Probably they move slowly because it's so hot. Southerners tend not to trust people from "up north" because they talk too fast. Here's a cemetery in Georgia where you can find graves of soldiers from the Civil War.The West Coast is sort of like another country that exists to make the east coast jealous. California is full of nothing but grizzly old miners digging for gold, a few gangster rappers, and then actors. That is to say, the West Coast functions as the imagination of the US, like a weird little brother who teases everybody then gets famous for making freaky art.The central part of the country is flat farmland all the way over to the Rocky Mountains. Up in the northwest corner you can find creative people in places like Portland and Seattle, along with awesome snowboarding and good beer. Text by Steve Smith.
