Lava glow and zodiacal light, Hawaii, summer of 2018
Hawaii
The summit of Hawaii's Mauna Kea offers 360-degree views of the Big Island as well as amazing views of the skies above. On this particular night, lava jetting skyward up to 200 feet (61 meters) in the air from the famous Fissure 8 created an extreme orange glow in the east that nearly interfered with my ability to image the Milky Way's galactic core. To the west, a particularly strong zodiacal light can be seen. Zodiacal light is a phenomenon created when reflecting sunlight bounces off dust particles in space, creating a cone of light reaching to the zenith of the sky. Below the zodiacal light you can see the green-yellow light pollution of Kailua-Kona. The stripes of red, orange, yellow, and green in the sky are airglow, a faint light glow created by radiation from the upper atmosphere. The buildings are telescopes. The closest is the Gemini Observatory. The University of Hawaii 2.2-meter telescope can be seen near the galactic core. To the west, below the zodiacal light, you can see the Keck Observatories as well as the Subaru Telescope and the NASA Infrared Telescope Facility.
