Mattmarksee 1
Switzerland

Mattmarksee is a natural lake where what is considered the largest natural dam in Europe was built. Located in the Saas Valley, near the village of Saas Almagell, Switzerland, at 2,197m above sea level, it was built between 1958 and 1967 by Kraftwerke Mattmark AG, and inaugurated in 1969.

As early as 1920, engineers investigated whether the Mattmark Plain could be used as a dam to generate electricity. At the beginning of the 50th century, Elektrowatt from Zurich became interested and presented a draft in 1954. Kraftwerke Mattmark AG was founded in 1959 in the Hotel Beau-Site in Saas-Fee.

To start work on the dam, a six meter wide road was built from Saas-Almagell to Mattmark. Today, the Mattmark Dam not only serves as a source of electricity, but is also a wonderful place for hiking. Mattmark has become an excellent site for tours and excursions, and a modern mountain restaurant, at 2,205 m altitude, was built in 2008 to support visitors. Opening hours: 15 June - 20 October 2024 | 11 a.m. - 4 p.m.

From here you can see the Mattmark Dam, the path to the Monte Moropass, and a breathtaking landscape. You can also learn about the history of the region and the Mattmark dam through documentaries at the Info Cinema Mattmark located in the same building as the restaurant.
