Melrose Abbey Scotland
Scotland

Melrose Abbey, Scotland, is the first Cistercian abbey in Scotland and was founded in 1136 by King David I. Melrose Abbey is the burial place of Robert the Bruce's heart. In 1329, as Robert the Bruce lay dying, he requested Sir James Douglas to take his heart on a crusade against the enemies of Christ. On Bruce's death, his heart was removed and placed into a silver casket. He carried Bruce's heart into battle against the Moors in Spain before it was finally buried at Melrose Abbey.
