This view shows the Tom Smith Cabin in the Warner Mountains between Alturas & Cedarville, California.  It was built of course by Tom Smith, a Surprise Valley rancher in 1923.  This one-room, lodgepole pine cabin served as a line shack and supply base while Smith grazed his cattle in the Warner's lush summer pastures. Smith is also known for his leadership in constructing the much-used Summit Trail with a crew of local people. This group is also credited with stocking the area's wilderness lakes with fish.

Today, Tom Smith Cabin looks much as it did in the 1920s: a rustic-looking cabin in a magnificent mountain setting.  The structure was restabilized during the summer of 1991.  The doorway is small however, made more for a hobbit.  There are numerous signatures throughout the wood beams, the earliest I think I found was dated 1926 w/ many from the 1930s to more recent.  Nearby is a storage shed that overlooks nearby Cottonwood Creek.
