The mudslide brought by Typhoon Morakot in 2009 instantly flooded over Siaolin Village and killed hundreds of villagers. The Siaolin Village Memorial Park was established in memory of the dead. The layout of the park followed that of the village. In addition to the Memorial Square, the shrine, and the Contemplation Bridge, there is the Road of Suffering. The names of the 462 villages who lost their lives in the typhoon are carved on the walls of the Road of Suffering. At the end of the road is a domed building that symbolizes the cycle, or transmigration of life. The building allows visitors to have a breathtaking view of the surroundings.
