the wonderful Benedictine Monastery Hronský Beňadik
Slovakia
The monastery stood already in 1075. The construction of today's complex of buildings took place during the reign of King Louis I the Great of Anjou in the years 1345-1350. The first building was a Gothic church and three shrines with cross vaults. At the same time, the construction of monastery buildings was started. After the completion of this construction stage, at the end of the 14th century, they built a triple nave with a pair of characteristic towers and a representative Late Gothic entrance portal. The construction of the monastery was supplemented by a southern wing with a cross corridor. The last building dating back to the Gothic period was the so-called the abbey wing, completed in 1508. In the center of the monastery was the monastery garden. After the construction work was completed, the church began to be filled with important works of art, especially altars, of which very little has been preserved.
