Gigapixel view from the summit of Thompson Peak (elev. 9,003') in the Trinity Alps Wilderness near Weaverville, California. The peak is the highest of the Trinity Alps & second highest in the Klamath Mountains after Mt. Eddy. Great views in all directions of the Red, White, & Green Trinities w/ the nearby peaks of Wedding Cake, Mt. Hilton, Sawtooth Mountain, & Caesar Peak. Getting here is arduous from any direction, & for me I had gotten a bit dehydrated, but is well worth the view as one can see Mt. Shasta as the high peak to the northeast, the Yolla Bolla Mountains to the far south, the Central Valley in haze, much of the Klamath Mountains going north & even the distant Pacific Ocean on the western horizon. This area is all comprised of granite, a splitoff of the Sierra Batholith further south as earthquakes & faults transported these mountains to the northwest. There are plenty of alpine lakes as well as a small glacier directly below this peak currently encased in snow facing towards the deep blue Grizzly Lake.
