The Horseshoe Ranch Wildlife Area is located near to Iron Gate Reservoir east of Hornbrook, California. A gated old road leads a short distance through a canyon to this old former spring cabin, the only relic remaining of the former Horseshoe cattle ranch. Owned by the Southern Pacific Railroad in 1898, the ranch was established in 1908 & in 1978 the California Department of Fish & Game acquired the land. This spring cabin was used by ranchers to refrigerate food & to preserve meat, fruit, & dairy products. One can walk inside & also see the upper level, however it is inaccessible & the back end of the structure has also fallen apart. During the summer of 2018, the Klamathon Fire raged through this area, burning the brush in the background, however the cabin was spared. More info here:
