Al Oda Kilisesi Mut Vr Mersin 00a
Turkey
It is 3 km to the northwest of Alahan Monastery in Mut District, Mersin. We encounter a rock tomb looking like a tower on the left while traveling towards Karaman, setting off from the Alahan Monastery. We turn left from this tomb and follow the course downwards. The place called Al Oda is actually a cave church, accompanied by a nearby monastery complex. The monastery and the church are separated by a deep cliff. Scenes from the life of Jesus like “Descent of Jesus from the Cross”, “Angel and Women in the Grave” and “Descent of Jesus into Hell” are represented in the fresco on the walls of Al Oda. Apart from fire exposures they suffered in different periods, frescos here are quite damaged due to natural impacts. They are dated to the 8th and 10th centuries AD.
