This place, which has been called as Arsinoe until now, is the modern Maraş Hill located on a high hill overlooking the sea like a cape, within the borders of Çubukkoyağı Neighborhood, 2 km to Bozyazı District, Mersin. It was found out that the settlement was originally founded by Aetos of Aspendos around 270 BC. The city founded in the name of the wife of Egyptian King Ptolemais I (also, the sister of Aetos), was known as the “Sacred City” of the king, wife and the sister. The city was abandoned during the early Middle Age and it was not resettled again. The remains of fortress walls that were built on the hill conformant with the inclination of the slope around the eastern and the western pier are still visible today. The two-tier and vaulted grave structures, some of whose lids are covered with mosaics, grasp our attention in this archeological site as well. Three churches from the Byzantine Period were identified, but only the traces of their fundamentals are visible today.
