Askja - Stratovolcano

Askja is a stratovolcano located in the central highlands of Iceland. A large eruption took place here in 1875. Ash landing after the eruption made life quite difficult from many Icelanders at the time. It caused many people to leave the country due to difficult in keeping livestock on the ash poisoned ground.

Öskjuvatn is the largest of the two lakes seen in the image and is the 2nd deepest lake in Iceland at 220 metres deep.
The smaller of the two lakes is named Víti and is around 150 metres in diameter. The water in this lake is quite warm and many visitors swim here.  This crater was formed during the eruption in 1875.
In this image you might notice the lack of ice within Öskjuvatn, this is deemed to be quite unusual. There are some beliefs that another eruption is due to take place.
