Austin, Nevada, until recently looked like the town the everyone forgot. There are now some new businesses but the look of the town has not changed substantially in over 100 years. The town is located in almost the exact center of the huge state of Nevada in Lander County and has a population of only 350. It is high in the Toiyabe Mountains at over 6,600 feet in elevation. The town was founded in 1862 as a mining town along the Pony Express Route through the deserts of Nevada. There are still turquoise mines in the area but the original silver mines have long since closed down. The town is the headquarters of the Yomba Shoshone Tribe and the Yomba Reservation. The silver veins in the Austin area were small and yielded very little other minerals rather than the high grade silver ore. There were some uranium deposits discovered in the area in the 1950s.
