The ancient Paço of Archbishops, Braga, is a set of buildings that have been built over the centuries:
On the north side is the oldest volume, with a medieval castle, crowned by Merlões, was commanded by Archbishop D.Fernando da War (1416-1467), on top of a previous pace of D.Gonçalo Pereira (1326-1348 ).
On the south side, forming a wide, we have a set of 3 very harmonious volumes, classical aspect, warranted by D.Diogo de Sousa (1505-1532), D.Manuel de Sousa (1545-1549) and especially by D. Rodrigo de Moura Teles (1704-1728), whose stone of weapons is on the main axial entrance. The body that occupies the west side of the square was commanded by Archbishop D.Frei Augustine of Jesus in 1593, and at its top, a beautiful balcony, from which Archbishops of Braga watched the processions of the Holy Week.
Going back to the Municipality Square, the edification sent by Archbishop D.José de Bragança (1741-1756) Brother of D.João V in 1751. It is a palace, whose project was André Soares, and it is and stress two aspects that defend him: his volumetry is harmoniously articulated with the square, and the different ornamentation of the spans on the three floors, Use of balcony and facade doors on the top floor. An fire in 1866 partially destroyed the building and important files and the D.gaspar de Bragança library. The Paço Arquiepiscopal was restored from 1930, and in 1934 it was transferred here the district file.
