Braga, Church of Sao Victor, nave
Portugal

During the great persecution against Christians by the Romans, decreed by Diocletian in 303 A.D., a young catechumen named Victor was arrested in Braga. For refusing to worship the pagan gods, he was beheaded at the site today called the Goladas.

In 565, an archbishop, named Vasco Mendes, donated his Quinta de S.Vitouro to S.Martinho de Dume, with the condition of erecting all monastery. The archbishop then built the monastery of the Order of St. Benedict, dedicated to St. Anthony.

This monastery was destroyed during the Arab invasions, and would be rebuilt in 1031 by a priest Nuno Forjaz. In 1096, its patron Nuno Soares donated the monastery to Archbishop S. Geraldo. D.Paio Mendes (1118-1137) rebuilt and consecrated the church, starting to use the title of abbot of S. Victor. In 1486 Archbishop D. Jorge da Costa ordered the reconstruction of the church in Gothic style. In the century. XVII the temple was in ruin and the archbishop D. Luis de Sousa (1677-1690) ordered the reconstruction of the current temple. It was designed by the military engineer Michel Lescole, according to the principles of Mannerism, and finished in 1697, already under the influence of the Baroque style. Inside, we highlight the main altarpiece of the Porto carver Pascoal Fernandes, and his figurative tiles from 1692 painted by the Spanish master Gabriel del Barco y Minusca, and relate episodes from the life of Braga saints, according to the text of the historian Archbishop D. Rodrigo da Cunha
