Burke House, The Moonhole Estate, Bequia, St Vincent and The Grenadines
Grenadines

Tom and Gladdie Johnston retired from the advertising business in the 1950's to run a hotel on the tiny island of Bequia.  Their favourite place on the island was the rock arch known as The Moonhole and in the 1960's they bought the entire peninsula in which it is located and built the first house under the arch.  The Moonhole Company was formed and a further sixteen houses and service buildings were constructed.  An untrained architect or builder, Tom worked by eye with local masons and carpenters.  Rocks and trees were incorporated into the freeform designs using found materials such as whalebone and flotsam from beach combing. The peninsula is a private nature reserve but some of the properties can be rented for holidays. Although the island is very small it has a large reputation as a perfect Caribbean holiday experience.

Please see my other panoramas for more details on this property and the Moonhole history.
