Wind Vane Hill at Cape Evans
Antarctica

Antarctica is a beautiful but dangerous place. On Wind Vane Hill stands a cross that commemorates the death of three people from Shackelton's Imperial Trans-Antarctic Expedition: Reverand Arnold Spencer-Smity died 9 March 1916; Aeneas Mackintosh and Victory Hayward vanished on 8 May 1916. Down to the north-west is Scott's hut, from his 1910 to 1912 Terra Nova expedition: the one where his party reached the South Pole, but did not return alive from. Mt Erebus is seen in the distance towards the north-east: where an Air New Zealand sightseeing flight crashed in 1979, killing all 237 passengers and 20 crew.
