Church of St Barbara - Saas Almagell
Switzerland

The parish church of St. Barbara is situated on Kirchstrasse in Saas Almagell, canton of Wallis, Switzerland. It was opened on 1 July 1938 on the site of a former church dating from 1692. There is evidence of a chapel in Saas-Almagell dating back to from the year 1494. In 1893, Saas-Almagell separated from the main church in Saas-Grund and became an independent parish. It was Josef Andenmatten who first suggested building a new church and raising donations for this purpose. The altars from the old church were used for the new one. The high altar, dating from 1694 in Baroque style, was built by Johann Sigristen's workshop in Brig. The two side altars are dedicated to Saint Joseph and the Virgin Mary. The choir arch depicting the Sermon on the Mount was created by the artist Willi Hartung, based in Zurich, and dates back to 1963.
