City Creek Canyon is a public park located just north of downtown Salt Lake City. Memory Grove Park, located at the entrance to the canyon, was dedicated in 1924 as a memorial for America's soldiers and contains several monuments in addition to a reception facility used for events. On August 11, 1999 a tornado passed through Memory Grove Park resulting in the destruction of over 400 old trees. No monuments were damaged.
The creek continues another 14+ miles to its head, north of the city. The canyon serves as a watershed resource for the city, a wildlife preserve, and a recreational area for cyclers, hikers, and pedestrians.
In particularly cold winters, the slow flowing creek may freeze entirely. Here, the winter fog of the valley below is not evident, though it does color the afternoon light a warm gold.
