Built in 1822 and located in Am Vogelwald close to the Panoramabrücke and entrance to the Alpine Gorge in Saas Fee, Switzerland, this cross was blessed at the time so that the glacier would no longer grow from this point, but would retreat. Around 1818, the glacial tongues of the Fee Glacier grew and almost reached the village of Saas-Fee. At that time, if the inhabitants of Saas Fee, also known as "Glacier Village", wanted to go to the mountains, even cows had to cross the glacier. To do this, they wrapped old rags around their paws so they could survive the crossing. Photos from 100 years ago show that the glacier at the valley station of the Felskinn cable car reached almost to the tree line. Today, local residents beg Mother Nature to let the remaining ice remain. Saas-Fee lies in an idyllic valley surrounded by the highest mountains in the Swiss Alps, at 1,800 m at the foot of the Mischabel chain. The appearance of the village has visibly changed over a few generations, as can be seen in this panorama. From here, we can also observe some of the most beautiful mountains in the Swiss Alps: Feechopf, Alphubel, Dom, Tächhorn, Lenzspize, Nadelhorn.

Construída em 1822 e situada em Am Vogelwald próximo da Panoramabrücke e entrada para a Gorge Alpina em Saas Fee, Switzerland, esta cruz foi abençoada na época para que a geleira não crescesse mais a partir deste ponto, mas recuasse. Por volta de 1818, as línguas glaciares do Glaciar Fee cresceram e quase atingiram a aldeia de Saas-Fee. Naquela época, se os habitantes de Saas Fee, também conhecida de "Vila Glaciar", quisessem ir para as montanhas, até as vacas tinham que atravessar a geleira. Para fazer isso, eles enrolavam trapos velhos nas patas para que pudessem sobreviver à travessia. Fotos de há 100 anos atrás mostram que a geleira na estação do vale do teleférico de Felskinn chegava quase até a linha das árvores. Hoje, os moradores locais imploram à Mãe Natureza que deixe o gelo restante permanecer. Saas-Fee fica em um vale idílico cercado pelas montanhas mais altas dos Alpes Suíços, a 1.800 m no sopé da cadeia Mischabel. A aparência da aldeia mudou visivelmente ao longo de algumas gerações, como se pode ver neste panorama.
