Due to lack of glyphic inscriptions is unknown what the pre-Hispanic name of El Rey "The King", settlement located in the southern part of the island of Cancun. The current name came about during the early stages of exploration, when an anthropomorphic sculpture was discovered with a carved garment researchers found the headdress of a monarch. The head of "The King" became part of the heritage of the Archaeological Museum of Cancun.
