View from the summit of Eldorado Peak (elev. 8,868') in North Cascades National Park near Marblemount, Washington. With easy access from Cascade River Road, the peak has a grandiose view of glaciated serrated peaks w/ views on a very clear day spanning from the Olympic Mountains & Vancouver Island Ranges to the west to Mount Rainier to the south to the Mt. Garibaldi region near Whistler, British Columbia. The true rocky summit is nearby, Eldorado's high point is actually a long snow ridge marking the top of Inspiration Glacier, it varies in height depending on what time of year you climb but usually remains higher than the true summit. Views of Mt. Baker, Glacier Peak, Mt. Shuksan, Dorado Needle, Tepeh Towers, Challenger & the Pickets, Luna, Hozomeen Mountain, Jack Mountain, Forbidden Peak, Mt. Logan, Buckner Peak, Goode Mtn, Boston & Sahale Peaks, Johannesburg Mountain, Bonanza Peak, Dome Peak, Buckindy, Snowking, Sauk, the distant Alpine Lakes Wilderness & many more. Look behind Sloan Peak, known as the Matterhorn of the North Cascades, to get a ghostly view of Mt. Rainier. The peak also marks the high point of the informally known Eldorado Icecap, which includes a decent area of glaciers stretching to the north over several very spired & gendarmed peaks. Directly below is Moraine Lake getting its green color due to silt from Forbidden & Inspiration Glaciers. There is a remarkable contrast b/w the south versus north facing slopes of these mountains, the north faces of course holding all the glaciers and giving the appearance of the "American Alps", all the more reason why I love climbing here. Did it in one day though w/ the evening "Shenendoah effect" on the mountains & ridges I kind of wish I had made it a two day adventure.

The United States is one of the most diverse countries on earth, jam packed full of amazing sights from St. Patrick's cathedral in New York to Mount Hollywood California. The Northeast region is where it all started. Thirteen British colonies fought the American Revolution from here and won their independence in the first successful colonial rebellion in history. Take a look at these rolling hills carpeted with foliage along the Hudson river here, north of New York City. The American south is known for its polite people and slow pace of life. Probably they move slowly because it's so hot. Southerners tend not to trust people from "up north" because they talk too fast. Here's a cemetery in Georgia where you can find graves of soldiers from the Civil War.The West Coast is sort of like another country that exists to make the east coast jealous. California is full of nothing but grizzly old miners digging for gold, a few gangster rappers, and then actors. That is to say, the West Coast functions as the imagination of the US, like a weird little brother who teases everybody then gets famous for making freaky art.The central part of the country is flat farmland all the way over to the Rocky Mountains. Up in the northwest corner you can find creative people in places like Portland and Seattle, along with awesome snowboarding and good beer. Text by Steve Smith.
