The Escalante Arm of Lake Powell fills the lower stretch of the Escalante River gorge. The Escalante River carved a narrow and winding sandstone gorge as it meandered 90 miles from its start near the town of Escalante, Utah. Previously a tributary of the Colorado River, the Escalante now empties into Lake Powell. Both the upstream and flooded downstream portions offer the hiker or boater a chance to explore slot canyons, Ancient Pueblo ruins, sandstone arches, and other wonders. On a hot day, nothing beats jumping in the lake for a swim. Access to the Escalante Arm of the lake is not easy, requiring either a 50+ mile drive along the Hole-in-the-Rock road (which ends in a difficult 5 mile stretch that requires 4WD and some skill!) or a 30 mile boat ride from Bullfrog Marina in Utah.
