Las Medulas, gold mine of the roman empire, humankind heritage site
Northern Spain

This was the biggest gold mine of the roman empire, providing most of its gold from the 1st to 3rd century, when it was abandoned. The landscape has remained untouched since then, and was declared Humankind Heritage place by UNESCO
