Gunung Kawi

The Gunung Kawi temple complex can be found in the Balinese regency Gianyar, close to Tampaksiring village on the banks of the Pakrisan river.

According written records, it is believed that these ancient 7 metre high shrines were carved out in the face of the rock around 1000 A.D. The shrines have the form of burial towers as can be found on Central- and East Java.

Opposite the shrines accross the Pakrisan river, 5 more of these shrines can be found in a rockface and a local guide can bring visitors to another single shrine which is a short distance away from the main complex.

Legends say that the monument was accomplished in honor of the 11th century ruling nobles of South Java and Bali.
