Hachioji Castle Ruins - Walking Track / 八王子城跡 林道
Tama

Annual trip to Tokyo, August 2012. Hachioji Castle Ruins - a garden in the forest.

Hachioji Castle has... a bloody history which is well summarised here.

Fast-forward some centuries to the present and the area as well as a few other bits and pieces in the vicinity are now promoted as a tourist attraction. Compared to, say a nearby tourist juggernaut that is Takaosan, I wouldn’t say it has taken off like a rocket just yet. But still it was well worth a visit for me. A new visitors centre is slated to open soon – I walked past the newly built building on the way here from Takaosan (not Takaosan-guchi!) station.

A gentle walk along a path starting from the existing visitors centre heading southwest towards Hikihashi will soon lead to this nice greeny area in the forest. This trail offers a much easier walk than the other major trail which climbs Shiroyama to get to Hachioji Shrine and to the castle's Honmaru remains at the summit.

More About Tama

Tama area is the name of the western part of Tokyo Metropolis.  It consists of 26 cities, 3 towns and a village.  A lot of people (about 4 milion) live in a eastern half part of the area.  However, there are many mountains in the western part of Tama area, and there are very little flat land.  Many hiking spots are in the western area, so you can enjoy walking on the trail, camping, and so on.  If you see the beautiful mountain scene, you may not believe this is also in Tokyo.
