It was formed in 1960. Meeting served as the basis for the art collection of the Regional Museum, which consisted mainly of works by local artists. It also included a small number of works of ancient art, and about thirty works of Russian artists, sent Archangel of the Imperial Academy of Arts in 1916 and the State Russian Museum in 1930. Collection was replenished as works of Russian art from the Solvychegodsk History and Art Museum, transferred to the museum of the State Museum Fund in 1921. Collection of the Museum of the Archangel then numbered about a thousand exhibits. 

Currently, the museum's collection of more than 30 thousand works of domestic art, created in the period from the 14th century to the present day. 

Arkhangelsk Museum of Fine Arts, in contrast to other museums in Russia, which are based on the gifts of Russian patrons, created his collection due to the active and tireless collecting activities, especially in the 1960s - 80s. At this time, thanks to the numerous expeditions to the area of the Arkhangelsk region and contacts with well-known private collectors and artists in Moscow, Leningrad, Kiev, to create a unique collection. 

The museum houses a collection of ancient northern iconography and wooden sculpture of 14-18 centuries., As well as a rich collection of northern folk art, including folk costumes, embroidery, weaving, carving and painting on wood, metalwork and ceramics. The collection of Russian art of the 18th-beginning of the 20th centuries. includes works by almost all famous Russian artists such as F.Rokotov, K.Bryullov, Ivan Aivazovsky, I.Kramskoy, I.Shishkin and others. Contemporary art works by artists in different fields, including Arkhangelsk craftsmen. The museum has a collection of the best in the country today holmogorskoj bone carving - craftsman who lives in the north for more than four hundred years. Exhibitions from the museum's collection is often exhibited in museums in central Russia, as well as in England, Belgium, Germany, Iceland, Norway, Finland, Poland, Japan and other countries. 

State Museum Association "Art Culture of the Russian North" - is not only a depository of Russian and contemporary art, it is the center of the artistic life of the city. Festivals of contemporary art, concerts, evenings of classical music have become a good tradition and are popular with the townspeople. 

The museum is constantly improving ways of working with the audience. A program of "Museum and School", which includes topics of lectures, tours and classes for students of classes 1-10. Special programs are offered for elementary school teachers, literature, history, class teachers, students, and kindergartens. Museums festivals, concerts, art studio, interactive forms of work has always attracted spectators.
