Ivy Lodge Front
Philadelphia

One of the oldest of the 'new' Germantown mansions, built around 1853, Ivy Lodge sits close to Penn Street but is screened by a high stone wall and an impenetrable stand of bamboo.  It was a deep mystery to me in childhood; now I finally know what it looks like.  The magnificent cut leaf beech tree is probably as old as the house.
