Lake Kanieris - a type of lagoon lake, which has at least 14 islands within its 11.44 square kilometer large territory. The lake is shallow – the average depth is 0.6 m, but the deepest place is 1.8 m. The largest islands of the lake are Krievu and Riekstu Islands, but the most famous river that flows into the lake is Slocene. Lake Kaņieris is rich with fishes – more then 20 fish species have been found here, thus fishermen love this lake. 237 bird species can be found in and around the lake.
A lot of rare plants are also growing here. Sulphur springs are created in Devonian rocks around Lake Kaņieris; therefore since 1939 the lake has been included in protected areas of suplhur springs. But in 1964 Zoological Restrictions of the Lake Kaņieris area were created. Since 1955 the whole territory of Lapmežciems has been included in the territory of Ķemeri National Park.
