A traveller looks up at some Kauri trees in the Puketi Forest in the North Island of New Zealand. These particular Kauri trees are fairly small in comparison to some of the others that can be found a little further to the North. This type of tree was very popular with loggers in the late 19th and early 20th century. Unfortunately only 3% of the Kauri forests survived.
Auckland is the commercial capital of New Zealand but anything to the North can be considered "Northland". Preferred destination for tourists and workers alike when surf, sand, diving and fishing is involved. It has a solid rural base of Dary, Beef and Sheep as well as horticulture and wineyards. Whangarei is the regional city on the way up to Cape Reinga at the northernmost tip of the island.
