The Tinto range, sometimes called the "Hills Of Fire" due to their exposed red felsite rock, can be found five miles south of Lanark in Lanarkshire, Scotland.
Tinto Hill, at 2320 feet, is "Graham" classified (a hill in Scotland that is between 2000-2499 feet high, with a drop of at least 500 feet all round) and is the highest in the Tinto range plus also has the distiction of being the highest hill in Lanarkshire.
The summit provides panoramic views on a clear day of both east and west coasts, south towards the Scotland-England border and north to the Trossachs.
There is some speculation, that the original cairn of stones on the top of Tinto is of Druid origins and local researchers have demonstrated that, during the summer solstice, there is alignment between the cairn on Tinto and a smaller cairn on Walston Hill a few miles to the north of Biggar.
