LARGO DA IGREJA (SANTO ALEIXO DA RESTAURAÇÃO)
Europe
The Parish Church of St. Alexius Restoration is a church located in the parish of St. Alexius of the Restoration, in the municipality of Moura, in Portugal. It is classified as a national monument The church is in the words of Barbosa and Ana Leonor Briz in Travel in Our Land, "the right place to meet" the history of this parish: "From the courtyard, guests enjoy a superb view over the countryside and the houses, lavish and inventive in chimneys in wind turbines. If you like music, you know you are in the land of music lovers of all ages and many have learned how to tell when he was alive the art master José Lopes, mandolin player. " The present temple is the second of the same name, built on the site. The first building, dated 1626, was razed in the early years after the War of Restoration, when all the plain of Moura suffered repeated attacks of Castilian troops. In 1644 the church will still have served as shelter for the local population, when the walls of the village gave way to the attacker. The resilience of the people was reflected in the place name of the parish, henceforth referred to as "St. Alexius the Restoration." Reconstruction of the church, held some forty years later, in 1683, resulted in a simple Mannerist temple, a single nave with rectangular chancel. However, past a little over twenty years, the church was once again threatened by the Spanish armies, this time on the stage of the War of Spanish Succession. It was partially destroyed, but was expanded in 1733 when the new reconstruction, past the church with three naves, though keeping a full chapel.

More About Europe

Europe is generally agreed to be the birthplace of western culture, including such legendary innovations as the democratic nation-state, football and tomato sauce. The word Europe comes from the Greek goddess Europa, who was kidnapped by Zeus and plunked down on the island of Crete. Europa gradually changed from referring to mainland Greece until it extended finally to include Norway and Russia.Don't be confused that Europe is called a continent without looking like an island, the way the other continents do. It's okay. The Ural mountains have steadily been there to divide Europe from Asia for the last 250 million years. Russia technically inhabits "Eurasia".Europe is presently uniting into one political and economic zone with a common currency called the Euro. The European Union originated in 1993 and is now composed of 27 member states. Its headquarters is in Brussels, Belgium.Do not confuse the EU with the Council of Europe, which has 47 member states and dates to 1949. These two bodies share the same flag, national anthem, and mission of integrating Europe. The headquarters of the Council are located in Strasbourg, France, and it is most famous for its European Court of Human Rights. In spite of these two bodies, there is still no single Constitution or set of laws applying to all the countries of Europe. Debate rages over the role of the EU in regards to national sovereignty. As of January 2009, the Lisbon Treaty is the closest thing to a European Constitution, yet it has not been approved by all the EU states. Text by Steve Smith.
